SMITH, Frank Seymour (1898-1972) Wood Green 1913; Bethnal Green 1919; DL Hornsey 1929; CL Finchley 1937; W H Smith 1950-1972
Essentially a bookman he prepared at BETHNAL GREEN for the splendid stock improvements which he was able to effect at HORNSEY and FINCHLEY. He was Bibliographer to W H Smith during the later part of his career when he was thankfully able to shed his much less liked administrative responsibilities. His many publications included his LA thesis, The classics in translation (1930); Best books of the War (1947); What shall I read next? (1953); Know how books (1956) and, above all, An English library: a bookman's guide (1943) of which the fifth edition was published in 1963. He was an active member of the AAL and edited the L.Asst. 1927-1930 and its 1933 Report on hours, salaries, training and conditions of service in British municipal libraries (1931), a sequel to the similar report of 1911. He became a less active member of the LA Council but was responsible for the chapter on Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales in the 1938 Survey of libraries. He also did much excellent work for the NBC and its successor the NBL.
